François Thuillier was born in 1967 and belongs to the new generation of tuba players, renowned for their knowledge, enquiring minds and inventive style and known for playing a wide range of jazz and improvisational music with symphonic orchestras.

He began his music career in Doullens and then, after various awards in the ‘Music Conservatoires’ of AMIENS, LILLE and ROUBAIX, he was offered a place in the CNSM (the Conservatoire de Paris) in Paris in 1986, where he was taught by F.LELONG and received 3 first prizes in Saxhorn, Tuba and in Chamber music.

At the same time, he registered in the CIM (School of Jazz and Modern Music) in the Jazz Composition Department and continued his musical education with PH.LEGRIS, who was known for his work with contemporary music and musical theatre. He joined the ‘Gardiens de la Paix’ Harmony Orchestra in Paris in 1989 and since then has lead a career as a member of the orchestra, soloist and Jazzman.

Also in 1989, he met Marc STECKAR and his TUBAPACK, with whom he has worked regularly over the past 12 years and together they have created many recordings.

Since 1988 he has played all over the world in QUOI DE NEUF DOCTEUR with S.ADAM, R.ANDERSON, with Ars Nova, with C.BARTHOLEMEY, in the Intercontemporary Orchestra with P.BOULEZ (c.d. by DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON), with the Canadian Brass, the French Brass, Eutépé, Hexagone, F.JEANNEAU, D.LOOKWOOD, B.LUBAT, JM.MACHADO, M.MARRE, J.J MILTEAU, J.M.PADOVANI’S MINOTAURE JAZZ ORCHESTRA, Michel PORTAL, the Orchestra of Paris, Lyon Opera, the Radio France Orchestra, Y.ROBERT, F.ROSSE, L.SCLAVIS, STECKAR TUBAPACK and with B. STRUBER.

He currently plays with P.CARATINI’s JAZZ ENSEMBLE, A.EMLER’s MEGA OCTET, M.SOLAL’s NEW DECABAND, the COLLECTIF N’CO, the WONDER BRASS FACTORY, L’EVOLUTIV BRASS with I.MILHIET, G.MERCIER and N. VALADE, in the EUROPEAN TUBA TRIO ( S.CAROLINO, A.CAILLET) with J.L. POMMIER and C.LAVERGNE, in a trio with D.LELOUP and D.VENITUCCI and he duets with A.BRUEL and François KOKELAERE.

In 1995, he formed his BRASS TRIO with Daniel CASIMIR (trombone) and Serge ADAM (trumpet) and a duo with PIERRE ‘TIBOUM’ GUIGNON (percussion). As a member of these groups he creates many CD’s, gives master-classes and plays in many countries and prestigious festivals all over Europe ( Présences, Guebwiller, Eurocuivres, Episval, Le Monastier, ITEC in Budapest, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Lisbon, Tokyo...)

Being a brilliant soloist in all genres of music and a skilled improviser, he has turned his hand to new challenges; jazz and improvisational music, and has helped create many pieces for Harmony Orchestras - the Concertos of A.Emler (1996), J.M MACHADO (2000), JC. CHOLET (2003), M.LYS (2004), J.J CHARLES (2004), and J.P VANBESELAERE (2006); for Tuba and Piano – Y. GLOBOKAR (1997); for Big Band – CARATINI (1998); for Brass Band - S. ADAM, D. LELOUP (2001), Daniel CASIMIR (2007), M. STECKAR (1999); for solo and duo Tuba – C.JOUS, D.HAVET, S.KASSAP, P.OPRANDI...

He is an author of educational books (editors - COMBRE, LAFITAN and FEELING MUSIQUE ) and he is the proud owner of an Aptitude Certificate. He also taught in the Music School in Doullens from 1985 to 1995 and has taught in the Conservatoire in Amiens since 1995.

In 2000, he founded the MEGA TUBA ORCHESTRA, the Big Band of Tubas and drums in the Conservatoire in Amiens ( CD recorded in 2006).

In June 2005, he organised the ‘TUBA SHOW’ in Paris along with Jean Claude DECALONNE (FEELING MUSIQUE) and P.LEGRIS in honour of Marc STECKAR’s 70th birthday.

His discography includes almost 120 CDs with more than 15 to his name.

François Thuillier plays using a YAMAHA Tuba, a ROMERA BRASS mouthpiece (Spain) and SCHLIPFINGER mutes (Austria).

He has been the artistic director for the Jazz Festival in MONTINVILLERS since 2004 (http://jazzamontonvillers.fr) and is the artistic adviser for FEELING MUSIQUE in Paris.
